RISE Erwin is a non-profit based in Erwin, TN focused on the health of small town Appalachia. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, RISE Erwin is focused on providing immediate relief to eastern TN.
The Problem ////
Hurricane Helene is being referred to as a 1000-year event in southern Appalachia. With record-breaking flooding, landslides, and high winds, entire communities were decimated.
Erwin, TN is the county seat of Unicoi County, the US headquarters of Pyranha Kayaks, and the home of the beloved Nolichucky River. Erwin and Unicoi County are some of the hardest hit areas post-Helene – for example, the Unicoi County hospital was flooded and required evacuations via helicopter. Additionally, the median income for this area is just over $40,000, well below average for Tennessee, and even starker when compared to country as a whole. The road to recovery is long and steep, and rebuilding will take a massive effort.
